Great play by the lads - close result with a tense finish at the end
So a short match report on this covering some quick points. Datchworth were a good team of players who played good rugby, and it was a pleasure to have them visit.
As usual great showing by the parents for a home game, with excellent food laid on - thanks to all involved
13-a-side again, but hopefully our injured players will return in the New Year
We played most of the game without subs due to an injury early in the first half (Nahuel seems to be fine after a visit to the hospital), so there was some really good stamina and endurance from our lads to play the whole game
This was a bit of a game of two halves, lads defended well in first half and only leaked two tries
Second half was a better showing with an excellent 60 metre try scored by Hampstead, and a lot of pressure on the Datchworth try line but just not able to finish.
We had 2 players who had their first game of rugby ever and both acquitted themselves really well - both were players of the match
We're still playing as a group of individuals rather than a team of players, but there was much improvement in teamwork
There was some excellent tackling from both sides, with good contests in the contact area
Scrum was interesting with Hampstead dominant in the first quarter, Datchworth for the next 2 quarters and then Hampstead edging it at the end. There was a lot of handling errors with the wet ball which led to quite a few scrums
A loss of two tries to one was a good result
As I said to the lads on the day, I was very proud of the way they played and the effort they put in. We keep improving and getting better at working together and the results will come.
Everyone on the sidelines agreed it was a good game of rugby to watch, with Hampstead showing some real shape to their game after all the drilling at training.
We have a game on our return on January 13th at home playing Hertford B. There will not be much opportunity to clear out the Christmas cobwebs at training in the interim, so would appreciate it if everyone could make an extra effort to get training so we can get ourselves together. If our injured players return we might actually get our first 15-a-side game.
