Hampstead come out top in a close encounter

In their first home match of the season, Hampstead Ladies’ 1st XV faced an unknown quantity in Tonbridge Juddian, who have just moved into the women’s Championship SE 2.
The close encounter took place on a beautiful sunny day giving both teams perfect conditions for what turned out to be a great game of rugby.
Tonbridge took an early lead with some strong running which was swiftly counteracted by Hampstead captain Faye Hamp leading from the front for the home team’s first try.
The teams were very evenly matched. Hampstead showed an excellent display of team rugby with quick hands leading to tries out wide for wingers Kristina (2) and Souka (1) with Micha Palmer adding to the back three’s haul on her triumphant return from a shoulder injury. Hooker, Fran Hall, snatched one for the forwards following an excellent show and go from 10 metres out.
Tonbridge didn’t let Hampstead have things their own way, however, and their stand out player powered through the line several times from fullback to keep them right in the game.
With 5 minutes to go the away side’s conversions had given them a 28-27 lead but Hampstead kept their shape and some excellent handling from the forwards in mid-field was finished off once again with pace on the wing to leave the home side with the win – final score 34-28.
