2. Club History

Hampstead Rugby Club is one of the oldest clubs in the world, but has only been active in its current form since the late sixties.

Originally the Hampstead Heathens Sports Club was founded in 1863 and was the birthplace for other notable clubs such as Harlequins, Wasps & Rosslyn Park. There was a ‘temporary dissolution’ of the club at the start of the First World War & stayed dormant until 1967, when Mike Flynn & friends got together & re-formed the club.

Since the introduction of ‘organised competitive rugby’ in the late 80’s, the club has been relatively successful. We were one of the first clubs to embrace organised competitions for our 2s & lower sides. In fact all sides have experienced league wins, promotions, cup success and / or merit table honours.

We formed a Ladies team in 2004 & this is a rapidly growing section. We entered them into the league structure after their 2nd season & they already have gained 3 promotions, going unbeaten in their League during 09/10 season & gaining promotion to the RFUW national leagues in 2013. A 2nd XV launched in 2010 & is now involved in a development league.

The most exciting aspect of the club was the launch of the junior section in 2010. This has grown beyond our expectations and we have already been lucky enough to have quite a degree of team & individual honours. We see this as a bonus to our main goal - making all feel involved & enjoying rugby. We cater for girls & boys, & introduce children of 6 – 18 inclusive to the game. Training takes place Saturday mornings, 10:30am - 12:30, from start of September to May. These sessions take place on the outer field next to Parliament Hill running track.

The club ethos is to get everyone a run out who wants one, be as successful as we can be, with the emphasis on all enjoying the game.
